This past week, with the holidays and the new years, I naturally found myself spending more time with family. Interacting with family members as an adult is a great spiritual workout; you’re tested emotionally despite being an adult. what do I mean by this? Your experience may vary, but I personally hate it when I lose at something; it makes me feel less than and useless....

TL;DR Rather than trying to defend yourself, or your image, be passionately curious about the other person. Seek to clarify exactly what the other person is saying. What exactly are the two of you disagreeing on in the first place? There’s a chance that you’re wrong, and there’s nothing to lose if you learn something in the process. For now, gather the facts, and come to a point where 2 + 2 = 4, whether that’s a final conclusion, or a conclusion to state that we don’t have enough information to make an accurate statement....

Here are some take aways I’ve gotten from 3 of Paul’s essays: “Here’s a simple trick for getting more people to read what you write: write in spoken language” Make a choice on what you want your goal to be: to feel smart, or to have the reader understand what you’re saying. Dropping your ego and humility will get you further complex sentences and fancy words give you, the writer, the false impression that you’re saying more than you actually are You don’t need complex sentences to express complex ideas the harder the subject, the more informally experts speak because they have less to prove, and partly because the harder the ideas you’re talking about, the less you can afford to let language get in the way....

TL;DR Understand that trying to control the mind is like trying to control the weather; it’s simply out of our control Rather than focusing on what you can’t control, focus on what you can control. you can practice non-judgmental observation of negative thoughts as they come, then, let them pass through without acting them out in your behavior Choose to support/nourishing good thoughts as opposed to attacking negative ones. This means finding time to read/repeat mantras or conscious thoughts until they becomes so engined that they become believes Use curiosity to broaden your perspective by escaping your echo chambers of solitude in pursuit of relationships How else will you know if you’re thinking is correct?...

If you seek good feelings externally (vices, validation, consumption, etc.), you will never be content. If you seek good feelings internally (by doing good, being good, & pursing a good mission), you will find joy. Example 2 “Money buys happiness” and “money doesn’t buy happiness” are both true....

My Practical Experience A few major events happened this week: First, I envisioned and conceptualized the highest possible good I could do for myself, and put it on a small index card. The small index card makes it easy to always keep in the pockets of my pants Because the card is in my pocket, near my phone, I find that I check my card more than I check my phone This means that every time I read my hands inside my pants, and I physically feel my vision card, I start thinking about my highest good In theory, I become what I think about....
